Derrick Williams says he?ll regret leaving school if the lockout goes long

Most observers agreed that this year's draft class was one of the weakest in recent memory, both because of the coincidence of a relatively poor group of talent available and due to the lockout scaring several top college prospects (like Harrison Barnes and Perry Jones) from leaving school early. Still, this draft was not without star power, most notably in the figure of new Cavs point guard Kyrie Irving and Wolves forward Derrick Williams. While the former has been considered a top prospect for some time, the latter came on strong during his sophomore season at Arizona and impressed during the NCAA tournament with a combination of skill and athleticism.

Williams' stock was never going to be higher, so he left school and became the second pick in the draft. However, the lockout could make him regret his decision. In fact, he said as much to Holly MacKenzie in an interview for The Basketball Jones:

TBJ: So you would have stayed if someone said you have to wait a year for games?

DW: Yeah. If they told me I was going to miss all 82 games next season I would have stayed in college and enjoyed myself and enjoyed all of my teammates and everybody else who is involved with Arizona. I definitely would have went back.

It's worth noting that Williams isn't saying that he already regrets his decision or that missing any games would make him do so -- this statement is just about missing the whole season. It's tough to argue with him on that subject, because that circumstance would rob Williams and his fellow rookies of a key developmental season that could affect their entire careers. It's a little like how kids who graduate college during a financial crisis earn less over the course of their lives than those who enter the workforce during a boom period. (I am part of the former group and my life is in shambles because of it.)

On the other hand, Williams' decision may turn out fine either way. While his career-long development is a serious issue, it's unlikely that he would have helped his draft positioning with another year at school. That's not to say that Williams wouldn't have become a better player, but extra years in college tend to make scouts point out flaws, to say nothing of the fact that Williams could have sustained an injury or seen his Wildcats team have a disappointing season. No matter what terms are reached regarding rookie pay in a new collective bargaining agreement, Williams will be paid like the second-overall pick. If he'd stayed a season and entered the 2012 draft, he may have been selected near the end of the lottery.

It would be a real shame if this year's rookies don't get to play this season, but we can't say with certainty if players like Williams made bad decisions until we see how their careers play out. There are too many factors at play to pass judgment at such an early stage. Williams may regret the decision in June, but his opinion won't be validated until at least a decade down the line.

Video: Kobe Bryant and Derrick Rose connect on an MVP-to-MVP alley-oop

An MVP-to-MVP alley-oop. Excluding anything tossed from either Magic Johnson or Steve Nash's hands to any lucky All-Star game recipient, it's a rare sight to behold. And it's certainly made all the more rarer when the throwdown artist on the receiving end is a sprightly-but-smallish point guard. And yet, Kobe Bryant and Derrick Rose delivered the goods.

The setting was an exhibition game that took place in Manila on Friday night, North American-time. The Philippines is a basketball-mad country that more than deserved an all-star game of sorts between NBA players and the cream of the crop from the Philippine Basketball Association. And, via a tweet sent our way on Saturday, we have this clampdown from Kobe to D-Rose:

The smile on Alex Cabagnot's face (he's No. 5 in the video) says it all. Hurry back, NBA.

C-a-C Past Lives: ?You owe me 20 bucks, Coach Lenny?

Gotta getback in time ... Welcome to another edition ofCreate-a-Caption Past Lives.

The wager seemed like a sure thing to Lenny Wilkens ? his Toronto Raptors were in the middle of a game, the arena doors were pretty well closed up, and Mark Jackson had only started practicing his bird calls on the plane that morning. But sure enough, as soon as Jackson let his song cry, there was Forest Whitaker, materializing as if from the ether into a seat right in the front row. Wilkens never trusted Jackson again.

Best caption wins an important lesson about money (specifically relating to its color, because you need to double down on Forest Whitaker references whenever you get the chance). Good luck.

The NFL lockout ending puts less pressure on the NBA but the Superbowl adds more

You might think that the NFL lockout ending puts pressure on the NBA to do the same. I think that’s incorrect. An NFL season will simply distract people from the fact basketball is gone.

Video: Barack Obama is a terrible video-game basketball coach

No matter your opinion of President Barack Obama, there is no denying that he's the biggest basketball fan ever to occupy the Oval Office. He truly loves the game, unlike some sports-fan presidents who play lip service to various leagues just to seem like they're "with it." These are men who must learn about sports in daily cultural briefing videos, wherein they learn that phrases like "with it" are no longer acceptable in social contexts.

But the question remains: Despite his great fandom, would Obama be a good NBA coach? According to the video above, a computer-generated version of the president would actually be quite terrible on the bench. This randomly generated coach earns an F in all four coaching ratings, including Offense, Defense, Potential and Teacher. Even in the event of a so-called "teachable moment," Barack would not succeed when dealing with a player pooping in a teammate's shoe. It would be enough to change his nickname to "High-Drama Obama."

However, we should not jump to conclusions like YouTube user "khous06." Coaching basketball is a very different job than running a country, so the skills that help one succeed in the former don't necessarily apply to the latter, and vice-versa. For instance, can you imagine Larry Brown as the leader of the free world? He's much better suited to serving as a minority whip, or perhaps nothing more than a low-ranking member of the Ways and Means Committee.

New Podkast w/Dave McMenamin: Lockout issues, Kobe and Wilt

It's always fun when our buddy Dave McMenamin swings by. Among the talking points:

PODCAST
Andy and Brian talk with ESPNLA.com's Dave McMenamin about CBA matters, Kobe's knee and whether the Players Association is weakened by superstars going overseas.

Podcast Listen
- We discuss Derek Fisher's most recent comments about the lockout. For now, Fish doesn't anticipate the union decertifying, which is good for those who'd prefer this process not get bogged down even further by court battles and legal red tape. Plus, the players know decertification would allow owners to void contracts, which could leave many players vulnerable. Frankly, Jerry Buss might be tempted to take action. The Lakers have a fair amount of contracts, whether Luke Walton or Ron Artest or Pau Gasol or even Kobe Bryant, hamstringing payroll flexibility. As I joked, they may decide to go scorched Earth, then build around Devin Ebanks and his dirt-cheap contract.

- Fisher also shared an update on Kobe's health. According to the veteran point guard, The Mamba's knee is resembling the version from a few seasons ago. Is there any chance a recent PRP procedure will allow Kobe to turn back the clock on his body? I'll more than happily eat a seven-course meal of crow if wrong, but I'm skeptical. However terrific his knee may feel now, I doubt it's a reliable indicator of how it'll feel deep into the rigors of an NBA season. After all, Kobe's mileage is the equivalent of almost 19 seasons and these injuries have nagged for a while. One way or another, Father Time typically wins these battles, however valiant the soldier.

Mind you, even with these issues, Kobe's an elite player and at times, still looks like the NBA's best player. But on a day-in/day-out basis, he's grown slightly less effective and this trend will likely continue. However, whether or not he's better at nearly 33 than a still-in-his prime Dwyane Wade isn't particularly important. What matters is a credible debate remains possible, and that's a credit to Bryant's greatness.

- Does players heading overseas crank up the pressure on the owners, a common school of thought? Or does an exodus, particularly involving elite players, actually create the appearance of a weak front where the rank and file get thrown to the wolves? And in the court of public opinion, is a willingness to play overseas for far less money the equivalent of noses cut to spite faces?

- Finally, we attempt to do "the math" with Wilt. Talk about having to "carry the one."

C-a-C Past Lives: Paul Westphal has to let a good one go

Gotta getback in time ... Welcome to another edition ofCreate-a-Caption Past Lives.

Maurice had been with Paul Westphal for years ? the two first met in Mesa, Ariz., in 1989, before Westphal took the reins of the Phoenix Suns from Cotton Fitzsimmons. Through the peaks of Westphal's time with the Suns and the valleys of his two-year exile as a high-school assistant, one thing remained constant: Maurice. He'd even made the trip up the Pacific shoreline to Washington when Westphal got the lead job with the Seattle SuperSonics.

The two were close. Real close. But stray strands during televised tilts with the Golden State Warriors simply couldn't be tolerated.

And so it was, with a heavy heart, that Paul Westphal ordered the execution of Maurice, his longtime barber. It was the NBA's last coach-ordered, league-sanctioned murder ? just one of many ways in which the 1999 lockout and resultant redrawn collective bargaining agreement forever changed the game's landscape.

Madison Square Garden is undergoing a massive reconstruction, as the MSG company has decided to stuff as many modern perks as economically feasible into the famed structure, which debuted all the way back in 1968. As we pointed out back in November, some of these new perks will include a spectator bridge.

Amar?e Stoudemire to start sports and fashion website

NBA players are pretty fashion-forward, at least in the context of professional athletics. Whereas baseball players still dress like 1995 and many football players consider jorts acceptable, the men of professional basketball seem to have heard of modern fashion and may even read magazines such as Gentleman's Quarterly and Esquire. They still require occasional visits from the fashion police, but they are not lost causes in need of a TV makeover show to set them on the right track.

New York Knicks big man Amar'e Stoudemire stands out among these basketball fashionistas. In just one season in New York, he has already worked with designer Rachel Roy and become a friend of Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. Now, he has plans to become a tastemaker of his own by way of a new website. From Mark DeCambre for the New York Post (via TBJ):

The 6-10 power forward has struck a deal to launch his own website at BigLeadSports.com, The Post has learned. The 28-year-old all-star will focus his site on sports and fashion.

Stoudemire is expected to provide exclusive content for Big Lead, which was formed as a sports blog nearly five years ago, in exchange for a revenue-sharing agreement and small equity stake in the company.

"This is definitely a great opportunity," Stoudemire, a popular nine-year NBA veteran, told The Post yesterday.Stoudemire is expected to try to boost fantasy basketball, which draws far fewer participants than fantasy baseball and football.

This site sounds like something along the lines of Jay-Z's Life and Times, although likely less flashy and expansive, and more focused on Stoudemire's chief passions of basketball and fashion. Big Lead Sports has a wide variety of sites in their network, so this partnership could be a good fit. Plus, their flagship site, The Big Lead, sometimes seems as interested in celebrities as in sports, so a domain that focuses on sports alongside a cultural pursuit won't seem out of place.

Since his arrival in New York, much has been made of Stoudemire's desire to gain an increased media presence, and the announcement of this venture suggests that he's on his way to accomplishing much of what he set out to do when he signed with the Knicks. On the court, Amar'e was about as successful as he was with the Suns, just in a clear starring role (at least up until the Knicks obtained Carmelo Anthony). If he'd performed in the same way for a team other than the Knicks, he'd still be a secondary star in the league. Now he's a media superstar.

You may think that's a minor gain in comparison to the chance to win an NBA championship. But that goal is dependent on luck and circumstances the likes of which are hard to predict. Amar'e went to New York and has already seen advances in his national profile. Along with the money, he got at least part of what he wanted in free agency. That's more than most players can say.

At its current pace, the NBA is in no hurry to follow in the NFL?s footsteps

The NFL lockout has ended, with the league's owners and players agreeing to a new collective bargaining agreement just a scant few weeks left in the offseason. Free agency and other personnel moves will be rushed, but the NFL will play all of its games on time. And both sides seem happy with their particular take of the billion-buck pie. The NBA, coming off a year of record revenues and sky-high TV ratings, would seem to be next in line, right?

It would seem to be, but it won't be, unless there is a significant change of mood from either side in this situation. And because the two sides haven't had a significant conversation in about a month -- even the last negotiating sessions toward the end of June mainly just served as treading-water sessions -- they won't have nearly the same style and familiarity as the NFL sides had heading into the meat and potatoes of their final bargaining sessions.

Sure, the NFL had a 14-week head start on the NBA, but that matters little when both ends of the NBA table are acting as churlish as they are, with so many factions within those two opposing sides threatening to take away from the main thrust of either the players' or owners' arguments.

No, the NBA is far away from getting it together, even if the owners and players are just a week or so away from getting together to talk about getting together (after only a month off, those devoted caretakers of the game).

The recent move within the Players Associations' ranks to potentially decertify complicates things. The antitrust suit the players would then file would potentially take months to go through the court system, with little to show for at the end save for another flexing of muscle by the small cadre of agents who represent a disproportionate amount of players and, more importantly, salary. And, most importantly, salary potentially lost either in the form of current deals that the owners are refusing to pay (even though they, y'know, signed them) or new deals to be negotiated in the offseason.

And even if the players stick together, and meet with the league as a union, the union still has more than a few steps to go as it walks toward the middle. The owners signed these players to a litany of moronic contracts, there can be no doubt, and a goodly chunk of them were negotiated with no clear No. 2 option for these players in mind. It wasn't always Team A vs. Team B, driving up Lucky Player A's eventual salary. And even when it was two squads going at it -- for, say, Hedo Turkoglu -- that doesn't make it any better, guys.

The players have to give in, though. The system is skewed in their favor, even if the percentage of revenue that they receive was argued and signed to in good faith by the owners back in 2005.

The biggest issue, as it has been since 2005 and for some years before it, are the owners. They're easy to pick on, because there are only 30 to deal with here, but they're going to be the reason the NBA likely loses games this year.

The factions are just too far apart -- and we're not talking about the players and owners. The owners alone have to come up with a better revenue-sharing system, and swallow the fact that certain small-market owners ignored the dozens of ways to improve a team without spending like the New York Yankees.

You think the Los Angeles Lakers want to send a single penny to Phoenix's way after the Suns owner wildly overpaid for the team years ago, then spent the next six years either needlessly overpaying for middling talent or outright selling off draft picks to add to his bottom line? Why should the Lakers help fund the Suns' stubborn choice to hang onto Steve Nash instead of parlaying their best asset into something that can help them become a better (and, holy cow, cheaper) basketball team?

(As an aside, this is a sound take on the situation, as the Suns realize on average that teams that blow things up often take up to a decade to return to a point of prominence. But statistics also show that you have a slim chance of becoming a two-term president, a Supreme Court justice or a NASA engineer. If you're smart enough, you can pull it off.)

You think the Chicago Bulls want to help subsidize the Memphis Grizzlies, a team that has repeatedly made waves about moving into Chicago's suburbs to potentially compete against the Bulls? A team that has for years worked with a Chicago-level payroll, even while missing the playoffs? A team that refused to part with Pau Gasol for years to Chicago, only to sign off on sending him away for expiring contracts and Marc Gasol a year later?

You think the New York Knicks ? nah. Not much thinking there.

The point is that the owners need to get their own act together before they can come correct at the bargaining table, and with so many owners willing to sit out the season -- they don't have to pay the players, and they'll still likely get $900 million from the league's national television partners, so why not? -- this is a fractured group that doesn't know what it wants, it won't negotiate even if it did, and it's about to meet up with a group of players that likely don't want to budge an inch.

Marvelous.

I have a feeling that I might put together the first fantasy football team of my life sometime next month.

Dwyane Wade over Kobe Bryant?

So says Tuesday's "5 on 5" panel at ESPN.com.

Asked "Who is the best shooting guard in the NBA," all five TrueHoop Network bloggers went with Dwyane Wade over Kobe Bryant. (In a separate piece-- Insider required-- ESPN The Magazine's Chris Palmer takes Bryant.) I agree. On a night in, night out basis, Wade is the better, more productive player. Better defensively, and thanks to an ability to attack the rim with near impunity, he has an edge at the other end. Looking at their metrics side-by-side (Kobe here, D-Wade here), to me it's pretty clear.

Some Mamba maniacs will see another example of the haters hating with their Haterade, but shouldn't. Bryant, at 32, is fourth among active players in regular season minutes played with 40,145, nearly double Wade's total. Add another 4,600-plus postseason minutes to Kobe's side of the ledger, as well.

Meanwhile, Wade, who will go down as one of the greatest players in this or any other generation, remains in his prime. It shouldn't be a fair fight. That the answer is even up for debate, let alone one in which Bryant's superiority can be argued, is a great compliment to Kobe.

Robin Lopez was tabbed to take on a bigger role after impressing during the Suns' 2010 playoff run, but he struggled with injuries and ineffectiveness. The team also obtained Marcin Gortat in December, but he's a merely serviceable player with a much-too-big contract earned in the wake of looking solid as Dwight Howard's backup when the Magic made the NBA Finals in 2009.

Despite their troubles, Lopez and Gortat are still in direct competition with each other for playing time. According to Gortat, they may not be the best of friends. At a camp in Poland, he explained what happened when they first met. Seth Pollack had the story translated into English for SB Nation Arizona (via PBT):

Marcin said that on his first day in Phoenix he asked Robin if practice started on the court or with a video session. Robin told Marcin that he didn't know so Gortat went to the gym while Lopez went to watch video. According to Gortat, a coach came to get him and asked why he was late and Marcin said that he had asked Robin and was told he didn't know where practice was starting. The coach said everyone knew where they were supposed to be. Marcin took that as a sign of where things stood between himself and Lopez.

Gortat went on to talk about the opportunity that Lopez had to earnand keep the starting job.

"This guy (Lopez) had such a big chance, such a big opportunity, to play in the best league. When I was Orlando, playing behind Dwight (Howard), I was praying to get a chance to play and he (Lopez) has had this chance for two years and he didn't take.

So I thought, when you don't want it, there will be 50 persons behind you, waiting to take this chance, and then I came by and I took (it). Sorry, that's business, that's life."

Gortat's claim that Lopez willfully deceived him is the most controversial, so let's start with that one. Pollack notes that Lopez later emailed him to say that the team does not know if practice will start with basketball work or video on any particular day, so it's likely that he was mistaken on this particular day. I have firsthand experience with Lopez and am inclined to believe him. He has quite a bit of talent, but he's also quite scatterbrained and needs to be told exactly what to do on a particular day. If he had really been trying to trick Gortat, he would have told him the wrong place to go, not gone back to his business of playing pogs with Alvin Gentry's young son.

Plus, even if Lopez had been trying to embarrass Gortat on his first day, he wasn't right to air their apparently one-sided feud in public. Lopez has been the subject of trade rumors recently, but he's still a member of the Suns. Gortat just called out a teammate's drive in public. What happens if neither player is dealt? What's that locker room going to be like?

Lopez has his problems as a player, and it was certainly disconcerting for Suns fans that he didn't take more of a leap in 2010-11. But that doesn't mean he has it out for his positional competition or doesn't care about being a good basketball player. Airing this out in public wasn't the answer. More than anything, Gortat comes across as paranoid and insecure.

Friday?s Seattle Mariners game will feature a whole lot of SuperSonics

Friday night's contest between the Seattle Mariners and Tampa Bay Devil Rays will have a greenish tint to it. Gary Payton, Shawn Kemp and George Karl will be in town as both the Mariners and the city of Seattle are set to pay tribute to a litany of Seattle SuperSonics legends. Tickets can be purchased here, and here's a snippet from the press release:

The hands of time will move backwards for one night as fans will get to listen to Kevin Calabro, "The Voice of the Sonics," introduce Seattle's former hardwood heroes. Players from every era will be in attendance, including: Freddie Brown, Michael Cage, Tom Chambers, James Donaldson, Dale Ellis, Hersey Hawkins, Spencer Haywood, George Karl, Shawn Kemp, Nate McMillan, Gary Payton, Detlef Schrempf, Jack Sikma, Slick Watts, Gus Williams and Lenny Wilkens.

"The Sonics fan community is thrilled that the Mariners have planned this amazing event to celebrate our region's rich basketball history," said "Sonicsgate" documentary director Jason Reid. "We would never miss this opportunity to witness the largest ever gathering of Sonics legends in one place. Momentum is at an all time high in the movement to bring back our Seattle SuperSonics!"

I suppose Jason is right about momentum being at an all-time high to return a team to Seattle, but from where? I just don't get where this stuff is coming from.

The NBA has locked out its players, claiming massive losses and a wide gulf between the haves and have-nots, in spite of a "have-not" from San Antonio essentially working as the most consistently great franchise of the time between the 1998 lockout and this one, and a "have" from New York acting as the league's most consistent go-to punchline. But revenues are at an all-time high, and if the owners could get their act together on a better revenue-sharing model, things should continue apace.

So who goes to Seattle? Memphis, a team that made it to the second round this year while playing under a rabid fan base in a new arena? Sacramento, a team that has been flirting with leaving the area for years but has shown absolutely no interest in Seattle? Charlotte, a team that was put together to make up for a once-proud organization leaving Charlotte, and also a squad that is working with a new arena?

The only hope Seattle would seem to have would be the New Orleans Hornets, a team the NBA currently owns and runs as it tries to find a new owner. But what would be the difference should the Hornets move to Seattle, and play at ancient Key Arena. Seattle needs an NBA-ready arena, but right now there's no current movement in place to build one. Most of us always thought moving the Hornets to New Orleans was a dicey move even before Hurricane Katrina devastated the area in 2005; but the team would be at best making a lateral move should it move to Key Arena.

This is where the Sonicsgate creators have stepped in:

The creators of "Sonicsgate" are encouraging fans to make their voices heard by filling out a new online survey form at www.arenasolution.org that asks how many NBA and NHL games they would attend in a new multipurpose arena. The results will be used to demonstrate the viability of an arena facility to local politicians and potential team ownership.

This shouldn't preclude Seattle -- and, really, NBA fans -- from hoping for an NBA return to a city that deserves a team and didn't deserve the duplicity and outright lies the current owners of the Oklahoma City Thunder tossed in their faces during the team's last two years in Seattle.

And it certainly shouldn't preclude Seattle fans from attending Friday's Mariners game en masse to cheer on their SuperSonics.

Free Agent Profiles: Power forwards

If there's a position on the floor where the Lakers have quality depth, it's power forward. When reigning Sixth Man of the Year Lamar Odom is the backup, clearly things are going well. Between L.O. and Pau Gasol, L.A. likely sports the league's best two-man rotation at the 4. Still, it wouldn't hurt for them to find a viable third PF for the roster, not so much to bolster the Gasol/Odom combo -- though someone to lighten the load is always welcome -- but as a hedge against injury, whether at the 4 or the 5.

Ned Dishman/NBAE/Getty Images
It's hard to do much better at power forward than a rotation of Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom, but more depth can't hurt.

The time Andrew Bynum spent sidelined last season proved pivotal, sucking heaps of energy from Gasol's legs and setting the table for what would eventually become a physical and mental meltdown in the postseason. While he has a chance to start next season healthier than virtually any in his career, Bynum still can't be counted on to stay that way. The Lakers have to assume he'll miss some games, meaning they clearly need a backup center more viable than Theo Ratliff proved last season. It also means a little more support at PF could constitute a reasonable use of roster space and resources, even while representing a lower rung on the priority ladder.

We've touched on the point guards, shooting guards and small forwards. As is always the case, it will be virtually impossible for the Lakers to land any of the pricier names available without a major discount or a sign-and-trade. Unlike other areas of need, though, attracting higher end talent, even players starving for rings, will be tougher because available playing time at power forward is so limited. A little positional flexibility-- meaning a guy who can shift between either the 4/5 or 4/3 -- would be a nice touch, helping open some options. Still, without serious structural changes to the current core, it's a tough sell.

So without further ado...

HEY, THESE GUYS ARE GOOD AND/OR WANT/DESERVE BIG ROLES! MEANING THEY WON'T BE IN L.A. NEXT SEASON, UNLESS THE LAKERS MAKE MAJOR CHANGES!
  • David West (Unrestricted Free Agent, New Orleans)
  • Carl Landry (UFA, New Orleans)
  • Jeff Green (Restricted Free Agent, Boston)
  • Glen Davis (UFA, Boston)
  • Kenyon Martin (UFA, Denver)
  • Kris Humphries (UFA, New Jersey)
  • Chuck Hayes (UFA, Houston)

West is coming off serious knee surgery, but is a former All-Star and when healthy is clearly the best player on this list. Landry would never give up the opportunity to continue his habit of eviscerating the Lakers by actually signing with them. Davis isn't a starter, but remains a very valuable role player who is too good for the role the Lakers can offer. Green has been extended a $5.9 million qualifying offer by the Celtics, meaning he's already been priced out of L.A., not that he's an overwhelmingly attractive option, anyway. Martin is not a guy you want sitting on the bench, potentially becoming unsatisfied with his role. He played center in Houston because the Rockets didn't have any other options, but his size makes PF Hayes' natural spot. Either way, he was among the more underrated players in the NBA last season. Again, too good for what L.A. can give.

Video: Shaquille O?Neal (yawn) disses Chris Bosh

Shaquille O'Neal never met a pathetic, jealously driven grudge that he couldn't get over; so the newest member of the Turner Sports staff in his first TV appearance (Turner runs NBA TV) obviously had to include a needless and not all that funny shot at Miami's Chris Bosh on Tuesday.

For whatever reason, O'Neal has been critical of Bosh's game for years, even once describing him as a transgender NBA star of sorts -- forgetting, of course, that it takes more chutzpah and bravery to be one's self and don a frock in public than Shaq would ever understand.

But because there's nothing going on in the NBA, we pay attention when O'Neal calls the Miami Heat "The Big 2."

Watch:

Perhaps O'Neal doesn't respect Bosh's game. It makes sense, because Bosh wasn't gifted with a massive rear end, as O'Neal was, to methodically and artlessly back down defenders for the bulk of his NBA career. It's funny, though, because Bosh has been in the league since 2003, and there's been very little to respect about O'Neal's game (including his out-of-shape and injury-plagued final season in Los Angeles, during Bosh's rookie year) since that season. Maybe Shaq blames Bosh for stealing his mojo? Or his calorie counter?

Who knows? Just understand that you're in for a whole lot of pettiness with Shaq at the mic, sports fans.

Lockout videos: Dennis Scott?s infamous basketball camp meltdown

Representatives for the NBA and its players will meet on Monday, in their first discussions in over a month, but beyond that all signs regarding this lockout are pretty dour. Players are fleeing the country and figurative trenches are being dug. If you're Clippers center Chris Kaman, you're probably digging a literal trench, somewhere in Michigan.

Even with all this bad news, you have to keep an open mind, a cheerful heart, and not let the anger get to you. You can't have a meltdown, despite the summer heat.

You can't do what Dennis Scott did, back in 1997:

"Scott then left in his truck saying he was going to meet a friend." My cheeks still hurt from laughing.

Stay cool, NBAniks.
